About the artist and their art:

Herald works primarily in oil pastels, creating vibrant pieces with confident, expressive mark making. Portraiture is his main focus – his pieces often start with researching the life and significance of the figures he chooses to represent. Often these are influential figures from black history, some well known, others less so, and figures from pop culture throughout history.

Herald has recently been experimenting with subtly overlaying text on his images using transfer mono-print methods, giving glimpses of information about the lives his figures led, and their importance to history.

“I like finding out about the people I draw and why they are famous. The people inspire me”

— Herald
