Charlotte Joseph, Art Facilitator (Friday Workshop)

Hi, I’m Charlotte and I began working at Artbox as a volunteer nearly three years ago and now work as an Art Facilitator.
I work as a freelance graphic designer having graduated with a design degree from Central/Saint Martin’s. I create images that visually communicate a message using a mixture of freehand illustration, type, computer drawn graphics and photography. I really enjoy experimenting with different techniques and styles. My taste in art is very eclectic, I enjoy anything from the Old Masters to contemporary artists such as Katharina Grosse and Oscar Murillo. I also love sculpture and 3D installations by Peter Thursby and Antony Gormley.

Here’s some examples of my work…

Laura Calloni, Product Development Technician and Evening Class Facilitator

I’m Laura, a visual artist from Italy. After studying Printmaking in Florence, I moved to London to complete an MA in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art. I tend not to focus on one media, although I definitely enjoy the process of printmaking and book arts. I believe in the transformative power of art and creativity, which is why I find working at Artbox so compelling and inspiring.

Here’s some examples of my work…

Toyin Olebamiwo - Studio Assistant

Toyin is our resident Wonder Woman - half Studio Assistant, half Artist, Toyin has been with us at Artbox since 2014. She started a new role this year helping to keep the studio clean and tidy - she especially makes sure to organise the materials "so they don't get mixed up or get lost."

Toyin also helps to get new artists settled in the studio. She shows them around, shows them where things are kept and introduces them to the other artists and their work. Toyin takes pride in helping the other artists, her friends, develop their work - including contributing names for artworks. As an autistic artist she takes great pride in sharing her experiences with others and making artists and volunteers feel welcome.
When asked if she was enjoying her new role she said "900% yes!" Toyin's hard work, enthusiasm and loyalty make her a great asset to our team.

Emily Curran, Administrator and Fundraiser

Hi, I'm Emily! I began volunteering at Artbox in 2017 and now as Adminstrator I help things run smoothly behind the scenes including with fundraising and supporting our trustees. I have always loved art and Artbox has grounded in me a real love for art projects where communities collaborate to make work and be playful and imaginative together. Following my BA in Philosophy and History of Art from UCL, I am currently exploring themes around social art practices in my MA, Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths. I also have a textiles practice focusing on hand weaving and crochet, I am currently working on recycling old clothes into yarn for new projects.

Madeline Alterman - Co-director/Founder

Hi, I’m Madeline. I set up Artbox back in 2011 for a number of reasons. Firstly, I have a younger brother who has learning disabilities, which gave me an awareness of the challenges, as well as the need for good support and opportunities. I’ve also always loved art and after studying art and psychology and gaining experience in the charity sector, decided that setting up a supported studio could provide some solutions to some of the issues that people with learning disabilities and autism face.
I still feel incredibly privileged to work at Artbox and to get to meet and work with so many talented artists. I am super appreciative of the staff, volunteers and trustees who along with the artists and supporters create the best community. And nothing pleases me more than seeing the wonderful art that’s created in the studio.

Alexandra Tidswell - Art Facilitator (Tuesday Young Persons Group, Friday and Saturday Workshops)/Volunteer Coordinator

Hi, I am an artist and art facilitator based in London. I have a degree in Fine Art Print and Time Based Media and in my printmaking practice I specialise in gel plate printing - a mono-printing method that is endlessly creative and allows me to playfully explore colour, shapes and composition. In my work I connect art with wellbeing and have produced workshops that focus on expressive and mindful art. I believe there is no right or wrong way to make art, as long as you are having fun and enjoying the process.

Here are some examples of my work:

Martyna Raczka, SEN & Wellbeing Support

Hi, I'm Martyna. I've had an opportunity to be part of Artbox from the very beginning, first in the capacity of a trustee, then a mindfulness teacher and I have now joined the team as a mental health and well-being support.

I am a great appreciator of art and love being surrounded by creative people. I feel privileged to be part of the team supporting the artists, staff members, volunteers and parents in finding the best ways of discovering their full potential.

In my new position I will combine my experience of working as an SEN teacher for about a decade and a mindfulness and mental health coach.

Georgina George-Scott, Co-Director

Hi I'm Georgina, Co-Director at Artbox. I joined the team in 2020 during a time of uncertainty and the Covid pandemic. The past 2 years have been a time of growth and have demonstrated how resilient our small community is. My background is in finance and I have worked in the public sector and arts sector. At Artbox I largely look after the money and fundraising and also make sure our artists and their families are getting the best from us at Artbox. This includes planning for the future or building relationships with friends outside of Artbox who want to support our work. In 2015 I went back to university where I gained a 1st class honours degree in Fine Art. My role at Artbox means I can be surrounded by the creativity of our artists and staff whilst ensuring the organisation continues to grow. I love my job!

Alexandra Nieuwoudt, Administrator & Volunteer
Hi, I’m Alex! I am both a volunteer and administrator at Artbox. As a volunteer, I am able to develop relationships with the artists and gain insight into their lives, whilst also having a role in providing a safe space for them to unapologetically be themselves and explore their art practice. Being an administrator allows me to take the knowledge I’ve gained about the artists as a volunteer and share their stories with the wider public, shining a light on their art. My main focus is curating the original arts page on our website, along with managing sales, whether at our own exhibitions or at events run by other organisations/businesses, which I also help curate.

Additionally, I am a student at the University of Westminster, studying a BA in Fine Art Mixed Media, with a focus on abject art, transcending that which makes us as humans comfortable, ultimately using art as a way to explore themes that transgress and threaten our sense of cleanliness, particularly in reference to the human body and it’s functions.
