About Us

Artbox London is a registered charity and supported studio in Islington, working with learning disabled and autistic artists.

Artists attend weekly Studio Sessions, where they have the time, space and support to explore their interests and develop their creative practice. Alongside making work in the studio, artists take part in cultural visits, exhibitions, commissions, collaborations and other opportunities across London and beyond.

Our approach is shaped around each artist's individual interests, ideas and ambitions. Artists may choose to exhibit, sell or license their work, develop new skills, collaborate with others or simply have the space and support to explore where their creative practice takes them.

We believe meaningful creative opportunities should be accessible to all, and that learning disabled and autistic artists should be recognised and valued within the wider cultural sector.

Who are our artists?

Our community includes around 80 learning disabled and autistic artists from across London, representing a wide range of ages, backgrounds and cultures.

Artists have different interests, ambitions, access and support needs. Since 2011, we have learned that meaningful inclusion begins with listening. We take a personalised, artist-led approach, getting to know each artist's interests, ambitions and access needs and, where appropriate, working with the people who support them.

Together, we have created a supportive studio community where artists can make work, develop their creative practice, build relationships and experience a strong sense of belonging.

Our mission

To create opportunities for learning disabled and autistic artists to develop their creative practice, build relationships and participate fully in cultural life.

We provide an inclusive and supportive studio where artists can explore ideas, develop their work and be part of a creative community.

We create opportunities for artists' work to be seen, shared and valued by wider audiences, and support artists to pursue their individual interests and ambitions.

Our values

Creativity

We give artists the time, space and support to explore ideas, experiment with materials and develop their creative practice.

Choice

Artists shape their own work and creative direction. We support choice, decision-making and independence in ways that are meaningful to each person.

Joy

Joy has a place at Artbox. Making art can be playful and absorbing – and sometimes it's about the simple pleasure of creating something with your hands.

Ambition

We recognise artists' talent and ambitions, supporting them to develop their practice and pursue new opportunities.

Individuality

Every artist works differently. We value different ways of communicating and making, and support each artist to develop in their own way.

Community

We create opportunities for artists to make, share ideas and build relationships alongside others. A sense of belonging and connection is at the heart of Artbox.
