Artbox's Hisba Brimah has her first solo exhibition

A world lived through mobile screens and 15” laptops isn’t ideal. Since March, we’ve all been adapting to the new normal and almost every industry has had to restructure their working processes. For a lot of organisations, it’s been challenging. But for one project, it’s provided an opportunity.

The Free Space Project is an art and wellbeing charity based in North London. It promotes the relief of mental and physical suffering through art by emerging overlooked artists. They have an award-winning exhibition space but lockdown has forced it to close. However, that hasn’t stopped them and on 17th August, a virtual solo exhibition of Artbox’s very own Hisba Brimah, will be live for all to see.

Hisba Brimah

Mindful Transformations is the brainchild of Hisba, showcasing her distinctive style; her fondness for abstract geometric shapes formed from combinations of triangles and quadrilaterals coupled with her expert colour combinations. We’ve always admired how Hisba’s naturally rhythmic work makes the eye dart across the page, moving over angles and a myriad of colours.

And now, thanks to innovative technology, visitors to the virtual exhibition will have the chance to see Hisba’s works in a new light. When caught up with Hisba earlier in the week she told us that some of her artworks have broken free from the confines of their frames and will cover entire walls from floor to ceiling. An advocate for relaxation, positive mental health, and meditation, Hisba has also designed a playlist of calming music to accompany the works on display. She wants people to feel “real and calm”, and to “hear nice harmonic music, nature, and stay calm”.

Hisba was selected from a number of applicants to exhibit her work in the first solo exhibition of an Artbox member’s work. She states that “she was so happy” and that when she told her mother and brother they “cried happy tears”. When lockdown began, Hisba got straight to work, using her creativity to stay connected to her friends at Artbox and to inspire those around her. She is currently working on designs for the Riso Project, but more on that later in the year.

Hisba is paving the way forward for artists with disabilities and is a longstanding advocate for widening accessibility to art, furthering conversations about who should make it and what it’s for. Her partnership with the Free Space Project could not be better conceived.

If you live in Camden and want to have a go yourself, sign up for a free workshop with Hisba where she will encourage you to use abstract art to explore your feelings. You can use colours that tap into your mood and the environment around you, all using basic materials and household objects. Find out what you’ll need for the workshop here.

Hisba is making waves in the art community and we are watching her eagerly as she goes from strength to strength. View her online exhibition from 17th August here. It’s open to everyone for free. Hisba will be discussing her works with Jennifer Gilbert on 27th August from 6pm - 7pm over on Zoom. Book now.
