Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King

Clay, Pastel and Card

This is Martin Luther King, a very important figure in the USA, and his wife Coretta Scott King, who was also a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as supporting her husband and being a housewife, supporting their kids.. The background is colourful buildings.

Most of my art is about African, Caribbean and American history, culture and people, like musicians, film directors and leaders. I know for some people that they don’t like labels like ‘African American’, maybe because they’ve never been to Africa and that their DNA is actually made up of lots of different cultures. But for me, it’s about knowing my roots and where I come from. I’m interested in how it all comes together.

There’s been good and bad in history and some people have been credited with some things that’s aren’t factual - like Colombus, the famous explorer, ‘discovering’ America. But people were already there. I don’t like it when things are make believe. Sometimes the media, even now, make up stuff. They give false information and I get tired by it so I turn it off.

I don’t get tired by the Black Civil Rights Movement and don’t get bored by it - I embrace it. I like hearing about people like Martin Luther King who stood up for what he believed in and he didn’t use violence, even though he was 6ft!

Them days when there was segregation, it was difficult. Not just in America but there was still racism in England too. It’s still hard around the world, there’s still conflict, it’s not just about racism but people not getting on with each other, fighting and not having respect.

I wish there were more people like Martin Luther King now, standing up for the rights of others.

Learning about him has helped me to stand up for myself and I’m free to be myself.
