Chantel has two catchphrases in the Artbox studio which encapsulate her favourite things about making art: “Big one!” and “Messy!”

Her piece for the Identity exhibition has expanded her scale, working on a long panel of wallpaper has allowed her to explore her signature gestural and physical mark-making on an expanded plane (a big one!)

Chantel’s loose abstract brushwork and areas where the paper has been titled to let the paint dribble contrasts with the highly designed wallpaper print behind it. It is a piece where the ridiculousness of mess contrasts and overcomes the ordered and domestic.
